Jelly and Bean (Follifoot Farm): My First Animals Series (6 books)

In this series of books we introduce the written names of well-known animals, together with pictures of the animals. Children will know how to pronounce the names from their knowledge of the animals.
In the written names the single letters 'i, o, g' are pronounced differently to those in words like 'tin, hot, get'. The names 'lion, tiger, crocodile' have a 'long i' pronunciation for that letter. The names 'hippo, monkey' have different pronunciations of the letter 'o', and 'giraffe' is pronounced with a 'soft g'.
We also use the word 'baby' in most of the books, so that children are also introduced to the 'long a' pronunciation in that word.
It is important that children realise that some letters have more than one pronunciation, especially the vowel letters.
High-frequency words already introduced in books A5-A16 and B5-B16 are also used. These are 'I, me, my, with, are, have, we, go, to, little, very'.
