Life Chat

Life Chat is an English communication textbook designed for upper-beginner language learners at universities in Japan. It aims to help learners hold natural conversations in English by developing their confidence, fluency, and communicative competence. This year-long course utilizes students’ pre-existing grammatical and lexical knowledge to enhance their conversational abilities.

Life Chat aims to:
- Provide a learner-centered, active-learning course, focusing on listening and speaking skills.
- Develop learners’ abilities to talk about themselves and a range of familiar topics.
- Expose learners to authentic English through conversation videos featuring diverse speakers.
- Build on existing grammar and vocabulary knowledge through engaging communicative activities.
- Scaffold and practice relevant conversation strategies to develop learners’ fluency.
- Develop learners’ pronunciation through video-assisted practice.
- Utilize the creation and use of individual scrapbooks to facilitate conversations and foster a positive class community.
- Aid vocabulary and language retention with the creation of learner-made videos.
- Assist students and teachers with additional free online materials for review and testing.

About the Authors
Life Chat was written by a team of five international teachers, currently working in various universities in Japan. They were inspired to create this book based on their own experiences of teaching communication courses to university students, with an aim to foster a more natural and active approach to English language learning.
