Looking Ahead 2

Looking Ahead focuses on the various types of writing that successful students must learn to employ; collecting, comparing, defining, developing, classifying, and others. In practicing these various forms of academic writing, students call upon a host of rhetorical modes such as definition and classification to support their ideas and opinions. They also develop facility in using a variety of academic writing formats such as paragraphs, memos, and surveys.

• Authentic, academic writing assignments from across the disciplines help students learn the necessary writing skills they will need in their mainstream college courses.
• Students practice grammar in the context of the writing assignments, and can review structures in the comprehensive Grammar and Language Reference guide found in each book.
• Readings from textbooks, academic journals, newspapers, and other sources allow students to become familiar with the vocabulary, ideas, and issues within each chapter's topic.
• Varied activities such as notetaking, interviewing, summarizing, self-reflection, pair and group discussion, and peer review promote the acquisition of academic skills.
