ISBN: 9784911164105 Author(s): Anders Carlqvist Publisher Perceptia Press Publisher Level: Single Level CEFR Level: B1-C1 The Path to Heian-kyo brings to life the fascinating story of Ancient Japan from the appearance of the first human beings, some 40,000 years ago, up to the 10th century, when Heian-kyo (present-day Kyoto) was the newly built capital city of Japan. The book is ideal for the general reader interested in early history and curious about Japan. It is also a perfect coursebook on Japanese History for high school and university students.
It is commonly believed that since Japan is an island nation, isolated from the rest of the world, its development and accomplishments are quite unique. By comparisons with other East Asian countries and outlines on how specific circumstances have affected Japan’s historical development, The Path to Heian-kyo offers more nuance within this established truth.
Across 14 chapters, Japan’s historical trajectory is laid out in chronological order, with chapters focusing on themes like long-distance trade, the military, and regional development. In addition to the main text, an appendix contains English–Japanese word lists and review questions.
