Therapy Care introduces mid- to high-elementary level students to the basics of occupational and physical therapy. Students experience useful communicative English that they can use in their future careers as therapists with English speaking patients.

Many first and second year students of therapy do not yet have a full command of their subject. They acquire this information in the later years of their study. Therapy Care understands this and does not demand highly detailed or technical output from students. Rather, the language practice is geared simultaneously towards building up from the base of that subject knowledge and towards dealing with English that helps them develop language skills in a practical manner.

Therapy Care comprises twelve units which cover a wide range of topics of direct interest to both future physical and occupational therapists. These include the decision to become a therapist, dealing with sports injuries, activities of daily living, and issues in elderly care.

Use this book for:

  • University Physical Therapy courses
  • University Occupational Therapy courses
  • Specialist college courses on Judo Therapy
  • Speech and Hearing Therapy courses
  • Self-study for those interested in therapy

Jim Smiley has a Masters degree in Historical Musicology from King's College, University of London and an undergraduate degree in Music Performance and teaching from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. This background has taught him the very real need for purposeful and varied repetition in study, a lesson that informs his teaching of English. Currently, he is an officer in the JALT Special Interest Group for Materials Writers.

Tomoaki Asano is a qualified occupational therapist and has a Masters degree in Education and a PhD in Health Science from Akita University. In 2009, he became a member of Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University and specializes in rehabilitation for people with dementia.

Michiyo Masui holds an MA in TEFL and a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Kent, and has been teaching English since 1997. In 2003, she became a member of the Department of Policy Management at Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University, where she teaches various courses, including Nursing English.
