About THIS BOOK

New edition in colour
What is Language? by Eleanor Kane Hinohara

What is Language? is a comprehensive guide to the nature of language. Adopting a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach, this book offers a seamless progression from foundational lower order thinking skills (LOTS) to advanced higher order thinking skills (HOTS).

Each of the 15 fascinating units blends communicative and receptive tasks with focus on form via teaching Academic Word List (AWL) vocabulary and academic language skills. Through practical pair-work discussions and individual presentation tasks, learners gain real-world English proficiency.

The topics progress from talking about one’s own language learning in Unit 1 to more cognitively-demanding topics, such as language policy in Unit 15. Further reading for students for each unit is also suggested in a comprehensive bibliography.

Each unit includes:
1. Scaffolded pair work
2. Authentic listening exercises featuring diverse speakers
3. Key vocabulary and AWL vocabulary tasks
4. Reading (600–700 words)
5. CLIL-based data analysis
6. Academic language function progressing from LOTS to HOTS
7. Scaffolded writing and listening tasks
9. Suggested individual presentation topics with space for students to take notes
